I used to be ashamed to be Muslim.
The memory is still vivid—stepping through the doors of James Madison High School in Brooklyn after relocating from Trinidad following my father's passing. Everything was so different: the sounds, the pace, the unspoken rules of belonging. In those early days, as I navigated this new American landscape, I made a quiet decision to keep certain parts of myself hidden. My faith became something I carried silently, neither denying nor celebrating it. I didn't reject being Muslim, but I certainly wasn't embracing it either. It was easier, I thought, to leave that part of my identity in the shadows while I learned to survive in this unfamiliar world.
In those hallways filled with strangers and unfamiliar faces, I made a silent choice to hide parts of myself. Looking back, I can see how that young boy was simply trying to navigate a new world—one where difference often came with a price. It was easier to blend in than to stand out. Safer to be quiet than to be questioned.
It wasn't until years later that I began to see the value in not complying with what I was seeing around me as usual or fitting in with the status quo. The journey wasn't overnight.
